VODKAT LEAGUE CONSTITUTION – SEASON 2008-2009
The Vodkat League Management Committee have now confirmed the constitution of the League’s two divisions for season 2008/09, following a meeting held on Thursday 26th June 2008.
The Premier Division (previously known as the First Division) will comprise 22 clubs, while the First Division will have 18 clubs.  This is in line with the wishes of the member clubs, who had previously indicated that the top division should return to a full complement of 22 clubs as soon as possible.
Restoring the Premier League to 22 clubs has been achieved by retaining the bottom two clubs from last season’s First Division, Atherton LR and Nelson, and additionally promoting Ashton Athletic, who finished third in Division Two last season.  Alsager Town also join the Premier Division, following their relegation from the UniBond League.

The full line up of clubs in the two divisions for next season is as follows. Click

NEWS FROM NEWCASTLE TOWN
Two presentations took place at Newcastle Town following the commencement of training for the coming season.
Richard Minor received his award for being voted Vodkat League Player Of The Year for Division One, while Simon Eldershaw was presented with a pair of boots after being voted Vodkat League Division One Player of the Month for April.
Meanwhile manager Greg Clowes has been busy during the close season strengthening his squad for another assault on promotion to the UniBond League. Greg has brought in prolific scorer Andy Kinsey from Nantwich Town as well as picking up 3 more of Nantwich's promotion squad - Paul Taylor, Ryan Dicker and Mark Fitton. He added further firepower to his squad by bringing in highly rated players Chris Budrys from Alsager Town and Jordan Johnson from Congleton Town.
Ally Brown has committed himself to the club full-time after spells with Witton Albion and Bradford PA and pressure has been put on keeper Jon Ritchie with the signing of top keeper Danny Read from Biddulph Victoria. Greg still has the odd player on his wish list but with all last season's players being joined by the newcomers he has already built up a strong squad with power and pace all over the pitch and good competition for every position.

SILSDEN’S FANZINE IS AWARDED TOP ACCOLADE
At the start of season 2006-07 Silsden AFC were due to play Bradford Park Avenue at Cougar Park. The weather was good and a sizeable crowd had turned out. Unfortunately the pitch was quite bare, hard and rutted after the wear and tear of the Rugby League season and Park Avenue refused to play on the ground, citing safety concerns. So was born the Silsden Fanzine “We’re not playing on THAT pitch”. The fanzine has now been crowned one of the country’s best football fanzines in the “New Football Pools Fanzine Awards 2008” winning the “Best Non-League” accolade.
The awards are designed to celebrate the writing skills and editorial skills which have created the football fanzine phenomenon. “We’re not playing on THAT pitch” touched the judges with its passion and positive approach to its club. “Witty, informative and generous in spirit it encapsulates much of what is good about the beautiful game”.
Jon Sheehy, director of marketing for The New Football Pools said: “From Liverpool to Leyton Orient, the National Football Fanzine awards are a tribute to the passion, dedication and talent which goes into writing the much-loved football fanzine. As a source for great banter, prediction and debate our winners really can claim to talk a good game.
THE FULL AWARDS WERE:
1. Best Overall Fanzine – ‘A Love Supreme’ – Sunderland AFC
2. Best Premier League Fanzine – ‘A Love Supreme’ – Sunderland AFC
3. Best Championship Fanzine – ‘A Kick Up The R’s’ – Queens Park Rangers FC
4. Best League One Fanzine – ‘Monkey Business’ – Hartlepool United FC
5. Best League Two Fanzine – ‘The City Gent’ – Bradford City FC
6. Best Non-League Fanzine – ‘We’re Not Playing on THAT pitch’ – Silsden AFC
7. Best Editor – Jonathan Fear, editor of ‘Vital Villa’ – Aston Villa FC
8. Best Writer – Mickey Blue Eyes, writer for ‘Blue Kipper’ – Everton FC
9. Best Blog – ‘Kopblog’ – Liverpool FC
The Silsden Fanzine is edited by football anorak Rob Grillo whose book “Anoraknophobia” has been a hit with grass roots fans throughout the country.  Rob writes: “There is no doubt that the quality of articles that have been penned for the Silsden fanzine was the major contributing factor to our victory in the 'non-league' section, so I would like to thank the following individuals for their fantastic efforts over the past few issues - Ian ‘Lost In Barrow’ Robinson, Mighty Martin Bland, Ian ‘Sandbeds Saddo’ Wharton, James & Matthew Robinson, Tom Robinson (no relation), Matt Lawson, Tim Lees.

“Also, a big thank-you to everyone who has purchased this, and previous issues, Peter Hanson & Dianne Littlewood for assisting with printing, and everyone associated with Silsden FC for their support for the magazine.”

Watch out for edition four next season, available from September (when the editor is back from surveying the non-league scene in Nepal!) at Silsden home games.

NEW DEVELOPMENTS AT THE SPIRITUAL HOME OF SILSDEN AFC

Silsden Football Club, which incorporates Silsden AFC, Silsden 2004 and Silsden Juniors, and Silsden Cricket Club through the Silsden AFC Sports Field Trust have been awarded a major grant by the “Sports’ Foundation.”  The Trustees have been able to purchase an additional 10 acres of land at the Keighley Road site in Silsden, making the football area an impressive 16.4 acres. The senior pitch has had to be moved and enlarged to UniBond standard and the whole area has been levelled with existing hedgerows uprooted. A drainage ditch has been culverted.
Work began on June 16th demolishing the football and cricket changing rooms and the cricket pavilion. The new development will include 6 changing rooms, a treatment/physio room, a committee room and an educational suite. The building covers 1710 square metres. The work should be completed by the end of 2008

MORE NEWS FROM AFC LIVERPOOL
AFC Liverpool have unveiled their first ever home and away kits for the season ahead.
The home kit is a classic layout of red shirt, red shorts and red socks. The away kit is all yellow, with red piping.
The kits have been unveiled following a 12 month kit deal between AFC Liverpool, kit manufacturer Uhlsport, and local kit supplier Argyle Sports & Work Wear Ltd.
AFC Liverpool’s steering group made the decision to restrict all kit offers to a maximum 12 month deal so as not to remove such a key decision from club members in future years.
Replica kits are expected to be made available, with details to follow soon.
Given the fact that this is a 12 month deal, supporters should note however that there is a possibility of kit change from season 09/10.
Further details and pictures of the kit at
http://afcliverpool.org.uk/go/1st-team/afc-liverpool-unveil-historic-kits.html
Meanwhile, European Cup winning Reds forward David Johnson has enthusiastically backed new non league team AFC Liverpool, who will be playing at Prescot Cables' Valerie Park Ground next season in the Vodkat League.
The three times League Championship winner, who scored 78 goals in his Anfield career, hailed AFC Liverpool as the new "boy's pen", and even stated he would be attending as a fan!
The Doc, as he is affectionately known, told LFC TV programme This Is Anfield:
"I think it is a great idea! To have an intermediary where Dads can take their lads, and it is to do with Liverpool Football Club and backed by the club is great.
"Too many times, football has moved on where Dads can no longer afford to take the kids, and in my day that was a massive part of learning the Liverpool Way and learning the songs.
"If Dads can go along with kids and can use it as the Boys Pen and learn the Liverpool Way - well thats good for me.
"I am looking to see where I can get a ticket," he said.
AFC Liverpool Chair Alun Parry said: "We are proud to have David Johnson's support and delighted that he wants a ticket to come and watch us. We'd like to advise David that our first ever game is vs St Helens on Wed 16 July. It's an all ticket match, and tickets are being sold at News From Nowhere Bookstore, Bold Street, Liverpool. We're looking forward to seeing him at the game where he will receive the kind of reception that Liverpool legends can expect from staunch Reds like ourselves."

Daniel Thwaites is a Lancashire Brewer and Pub Retailer based in Blackburn with over 200 years of brewing experience. Youth manager sought by Ashton Athletic FC

Ashton Athletic are planning to build on the recent achievements of its first team since the Club’s return to the Vodkat North West Counties League two years ago, and also on the success of its flourishing youth section over the last few seasons.
In particular it is hoped to push on from the tremendous achievement of the under 18 squad who squeezed past Altrincham FC to win the North West Youth Alliance League Championship last season, whilst also reaching the final of the Furness Building Society sponsored U18 Lancs County Cup.
The Club is now seeking to recruit a new under 18’s Manager/Coach to take charge of this year’s crop of young talent, backed up by the Club’s existing Youth co-ordinator and other administrative support.
With up to 10 youth teams having been operating at the Club for several seasons, and youth development now well established at the club, Athletic are moving towards achieving Charter Standard within the next 12 months and with it, hopefully a continual stream of players through to the Vodkat North West Counties League side. The Club offers excellent facilities with an ever improving ground and superb training venues throughout the year.
The new Youth Manager, working closely with the open age management, would take a pivotal role in implementation of the Club’s long term development plan. The Club aims to enable all players at the Club be given the opportunity to achieve their potential and hopefully progress to the first and reserve teams.
The voluntary position will have the chance to defend the NWYA title league cup competitions as well as having another crack at the Lancashire County Cup, not to mention the chance to progress through the early stages of the FA Youth Cup, and face Football League opposition.
Interested parties should ideally hold a minimum Level 2 FA Coaching qualification and should contact the Club’s General Manager David Powell 07770 696747.

DANNY STEVENS A TRAGIC LOSS

Eccleshall Football Club was shocked to hear of the death of their captain Danny Stevens who was killed in a motorcycle accident.
Daniel Thomas Stevens, aged 25, was thrown from his red Honda machine in the accident, which happened on the A5013 near Great Bridgeford on Saturday 14th June.
Paramedics, emergency doctors and the County Air Ambulance all attended the incident, which occurred at about 1.50pm. But the construction engineer, from Eccleshall, died at the scene from head injuries. No other vehicle was involved.

His funeral will be held at Eccleshall Church on Monday 23rd June at 11.30 am.
Danny made over 250 appearances for Eccleshall, making his debut in 1999-2000,
his first league match for the club was: Eccleshall v Vale Juniors on Saturday 14th August 1999, in the Staffordshire Senior League. He made his debut in a pre season friendly of that year, against Alsager Town - He was 16 at the time and he scored in that game, and was the club captain. He left and had a short spell at Stone Dominoes before returning to the club.
Richard Marsh, secretary Eccleshall FC - He was a credit to himself and his family and always conducted himself in a proper manner on and off the field. His friendly manner made him a likeable person to all at Eccleshall Football Club and he was respected in the dressing room by his fellow players for the way he conducted himself. The coming seasons will be empty without his smile. He will be greatly missed but always remembered.
Mark Askey – When I became manager 3 seasons ago I appointed Danny as my captain. He had all the qualities I was looking for in a captain. He was 100% reliable, he gave is all in every game he played, he was as brave as a lion on the field and a lovely natured lad off the field. I know how proud he was to captain the side and he literally stuck his chest out every time he led the team out. Everyone at the club is shattered by this terrible tragedy and our thoughts are with his family.
Danny also played for Sunday side Woodeseaves and played in excess of 50 games for Woodseaves from 2004/05 season all in the top division of Stafford and District Sunday Football League.

AFC LIVERPOOL TURN A DREAM INTO REALITY
AFC Liverpool are celebrating following a bumper week of good news that saw the new club sign a groundshare deal, and then get elected into the Vodkat League.
AFC Liverpool have signed a groundshare deal with Merseyside neighbours Prescot Cables FC which will see the mini-reds playing their home fixtures at Valerie Park next season.
This was followed by their acceptance into the Vodkat League at the league's AGM on Saturday 14th June.
AFC Liverpool Chair Alun Parry said: "Everybody at the club is delighted. We now have an excellent, atmospheric stadium to play in which has excellent transport links, making it easy for our fans to get to. The decision of the league's AGM puts us as full members of the Vodkat League. It means that our dream is now a reality."
The first round of the League Challenge Cup draw was also made at the meeting, with AFC Liverpool being drawn away to Cumbrian side Holker Old Boys.
Parry said: "It was fantastic to be present as our name was called out of the hat for a cup draw. It brought it home to us that all our hard work has paid off, and that we are now a fully fledged non league football club, when 12 weeks ago we were just an ambitious idea."
AFC Liverpool was set up to provide a non league club with an LFC identity for Liverpool fans priced out of the Premiership, and even has the backing of Liverpool Football Club itself, who sent their best wishes to AFC Liverpool in a letter earlier this month.
AFC Liverpool's first ever match is on Wednesday 16th July vs St Helens Town in a friendly match at Ashton Town's Edge Green Street Ground. Adult tickets are just £5 and child tickets are £3. Due to expected demand the match will be all ticket.
Tickets will be on sale at The Casa in Hope Street from 10am till 2pm on Saturday 21st June. Coach tickets will also be available at £5 each.

From the 2008-09 season, the two divisions of the League will be known as the Premier Division and the First Division, in line with many other step 5/step 6 competitions around the country.

Alsager
Town
have been relegated from the UniBond League Division One and will play in the Vodkat League Premier Division (previously Division One) in season 2008-09.
League Chairman Dave Tomlinson announced that, while it was the intention of the League Management Committee to work towards establishing 22 clubs in the Vodkat League Premier Division next season, due to some outstanding issues involving certain member clubs, the exact constitution of the Premier League and Division One could not be finalised on the day as originally intended.  It is the Management Committee’s aim to have the outstanding issues resolved and a final decision made by 28th June, although it is hoped that a decision can be made before that date.

VODKAT LEAGUE WEBSITE UPDATE
As of today the Vodkat League has a new look about it and we hope the new look site is appealing to you all. There are not many changes to the way you navigate the site, it is more of a cosmetic exercise. There are still a few pages to be completed and may not contain all the information required, it is hoped these will be rectified within the next few weeks.
Due to the statement above there are some pages that were complied before the the AGM and it wasn't know that the First Division (Old Division Two) had a few issues to be rectified, therefore the First Division is not the actual formation of the Division at this time. I have decided to leave them as they are, due to the amount of work that has been put in the get the site ready, until such time as I am told otherwise, hopefully by the end of the month.

As well as the encouraging turn out at the players meeting, the management team have been busy recruiting several new players to strength the squad. However, looking to improve the squad is a key aim and anyone interested should attend Tuesday, Thursday or Saturday pre-season training starting on Tuesday 1st July 2008 at 7pm at the clubs Edge Green Street ground.
Horner added, "I would first like to thank the committee for giving me this opportunity, which I am not only delighted with but truly grateful. Since my appointment, my feet have hardly touched the ground, its a new era for the Club and a great opportunity for both players and management alike. We are busy putting a lot of things in place to ensure we offer the best we can for our lads and we will be working hard at training to get them ready for the start of the new season, which promises to be an exciting time for the club and I look forward to the challenge."
